- Exhibition text All Eyes on Mechelen this Fall. TACK TICK Mechelen opens its doors and co-hosts Contour Biennale 11 on Saturday September 5 from 1 to 6 PM. TACK TICK, the new contemporary art space developed by TICK TACK (Antwerp), co-hosts Contour Biennale 11, ' The Eyes of the Heart and the Soul of the World ', alongside Kunsthal Mechelen. Curated by Sofia Lemos, the biennale runs from 5 September to 1 November 2026 across heritage and cultural sites in Mechelen. The Biennale is one of only two biennales in Europe dedicated entirely to moving image, and has grown into an internationally acclaimed platform for artists working in film, video and time-based media. Housed in the former Salle de Ventes par Notaires (1882), a Neoclassical auction house in the city centre of Mechelen, TACK TICK is TICK TACK's first permanent extension outside Antwerp, and makes TT the first non-profit art institution in Belgium to operate two separate, permanent locations in two cities. Rather than consolidating around a single address, TICK TACK / TACK TICK tests what a contemporary art institution can be when it operates as a network of shared spaces across cities. It continues a hybrid way of working outside the traditional models, built on collaboration, shared infrastructure, shared audiences and shared ambition. For the opening of the new space, Contour Biennale and TACK TICK present two site-specific video installations, by Gabriel Abrantes (1984, USA) and by Claudia Pagès Rabal (1990, Spain). Together, TACK TICK and Kunsthal Mechelen anchor Contour Biennale 11's presence in the city, alongside route locations dmvA architecten, De Noker and Stiltetuin Aartsbisschoppelijk Paleis. The opening weekend runs 5–6 September, with a full public programme across all venues.

- Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery is pleased to present ‘Shifting Perspectives’, a dialogue between Albert Rubens (b. 1944) and Jan van den Abbeel (1943–2018), two distinctive voices within Belgian Constructivism. Their artistic trajectories share a common origin in the Ghent art scene of the 1960s and the context of the PLUS Group, which broke decisively with the expressive and lyrical tendencies of its time. In their place emerged a rational visual language centred on geometry, colour, rhythm and a new relationship between the work of art and its surrounding space. From this shared context, Rubens and Van den Abbeel developed distinctly individual practices. Van den Abbeel explored how systematic structures and colour could generate optical movement and spatial tension. Rubens pursued an ongoing

- MoMu celebrates 40 years of the Antwerp Six with a unique exhibition in 2026. In 2026, MoMu will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the international breakthrough of the Antwerp Six. This will be the first time that a major exhibition is devoted to these six iconic fashion designers. The exhibition highlights the unique trajectory that connects these six exceptional designers. It began with their study at the fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and resulted in six highly influential solo careers. In 1986, Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee put Antwerp on the fashion map when they each presented their own collections at the British Designer Show in London. This led to their international breakthrough and established the City of Antwerp as a capital of fashion. Their unique designs continue to influence international fashion today.

- MoMu examines how textile practices carry and transmit social, cultural, and historical meanings across generations, with a special focus on chintz. Today, hand-painted and printed floral cotton fabrics from India – known as chintz – are once again the focus of attention. What story can a fabric tell beyond its wearability? Centered on the archives and historical textile collections of MoMu, this exhibition investigates fabrics as material repositories of memory, trade, politics, and community history. Focusing on hand-painted and printed floral cotton textiles from India, it examines how textile practices carry and transmit social, cultural, and historical meanings across generations.

- MoMu highlights the practice and passion of Azzedine Alaïa, uniting his designs, work process, and a selection of garments by the great masters of cut from his collection. A virtuoso couturier, Azzedine Alaïa loved to study closely the techniques of the great masters of the past in a quest for knowledge that never opposed him to them, but incited him to surpass himself. A discerning collector, he assembled a collection that reflected this passion, one that combines the art of cutting, patternmaking and creativity. Of all the couturiers and designers he admired, those whose architectural designs for dresses, jackets and coats most vividly came to life always held his attention. In a family that included Madeleine Vionnet, Jeanne Lanvin, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Charles James, Adrian, Claire McCardell, Madame Grès, Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, Comme des Garçons, Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler, Azzedine Alaïa wrote his own history of fashion, one governed by the sovereignty of lines and the craft of cutting. Other names and other labels, some of which have since been forgotten, equally caught his observant eye. In the clothes he kept of them, a single guiding principle underlay his choices. Whether simple or, on the contrary, elaborated to form a complex harmony, the creations found their way into his collection through their skilled application of techniques. The patterns and architectural toiles are the building blocks that Azzedine Alaïa employed with such mastery. He also collected them as illustrations of a discipline he liked to situate between the Academy of Sciences and sartorial poetics. The exhibition Azzedine Alaïa. The Eye of the Collector looks back on this practice and this passion, bringing together works by Azzedine Alaïa himself, stages in his work process that bear witness to this passion, and a collection of designs by the great masters of couture. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Foundation Azzedine Alaïa.

I thrive most in painting where I cannot touch the bottom. This August, Newchild presents Mine Levende Råd, Danish artist Kristian Touborg’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. Across a new body of paintings, Touborg moves further into a pictorial language in which images hover at the threshold of recognition: flowers become organs, reflected light takes on the contours of a torso, branches resemble bones, and webs expand like nervous systems. Yet the works also carry a peculiar sense of time. They feel at once immediate and slightly ahead of themselves, as though the conditions of a distant future have already entered the present. Organic and synthetic forms merge; decay becomes generative; nature and residue are no longer easily separated. Things appear to be changing state before our eyes, and what has been left behind does not necessarily disappear; it becomes a remnant capable of taking on new life. The exhibition takes its title from the Danish expression at vide sine levende råd : to know what to do, or how to find a way through a difficult situation. Its negative form, ikke at ane sine levende råd, describes being completely at a loss, without a clear sense of what should come next. There is no direct English equivalent, though Mine Levende Råd might loosely be understood as “my living counsels.” By isolating these words from the larger expression, the title holds both possibilities open: possessing an instinct for how to continue and confronting the moment when that instinct fails. Rather than resolving this uncertainty, the works remain inside it, attentive to forms of knowledge that may be felt bodily or intuitively before they can be fully understood. This condition is central to Touborg’s approach to painting. Rather than resolving this uncertainty, he makes it productive. His paintings do not begin with images whose destinations are known in advance. They develop through prolonged periods of disruption, obscurity and reformation: pigment is pushed, rubbed, stained and covered; forms are allowed to deteriorate, disappear and return in altered configurations. A work may remain unresolved for months, with its most decisive image emerging only after an earlier version has been partially erased or damaged. Time becomes embedded in the painting not simply as duration, but as accumulation: something visible in the layers, abrasions and residues through which the image has had to pass. “I thrive most in painting where I cannot touch the bottom,” he explains. It is an articulation of the uncertainty that sustains the work: enough control to continue, but never enough to determine in advance what the painting will become. For Touborg, this absence of footing is not simply a source of anxiety. It contains curiosity, pleasure and risk; the possibility that a painting might arrive somewhere its maker could not have consciously directed it. The resulting images operate through a similarly uncertain form of perception. At first they can appear indistinct, as though seen through water, eyelashes or a fogged lens, resisting the quick, categorising gaze. With sustained looking, forms begin to gather: a torso might also appear as a flower, a pupa, a skeleton or a cell; a stem becomes a spine; a bloom takes on the appearance of an organ or luminous internal growth. These possibilities do not cancel one another but remain active within the same figure, allowing several bodies or states to coexist. The ambiguity remains rooted in figuration, but in a figuration freed from a single identity—a world in which familiar forms have been subjected to enough pressure, time, and transformation that they return carrying the possibility of becoming something else. In Tide, water becomes less a depicted element than a condition through which the entire image is perceived. A luminous current moves horizontally across the painting, swelling into pale blue and violet forms that seem to surface and dissolve at once. What might initially register as reflection begins to suggest branches, ribs, roots or submerged anatomy, while darker passages gather around them like sediment. Touborg treats water here as an unstable repository: something capable of distorting an image while simultaneously preserving traces of it. Light appears caught within the surface rather than simply falling upon it, giving the painting the uncanny sensation of remembering something whose original form can no longer be recovered. A related instability unfolds in I Put Out My Tongue To Taste The Time, where perception becomes almost bodily. Against a field of mottled turquoise, a vertical form gathers through flashes of white, violet, red and green, alternately resembling a flowering stem, a figure, an internal organ or a body caught in reflection. The title proposes an impossible gesture—that of encountering time through taste—and points toward Touborg’s interest in forms of understanding that precede language. Time here feels strangely displaced: not quite futuristic, yet no longer entirely of the present, as though organic and synthetic forms had already begun to merge into a condition we are only starting to recognise. Seeing, touching, tasting and remembering begin to collapse into one another, and the image reveals itself through this uncertainty, becoming most vivid precisely where its identity remains unsettled. This bodily form of knowing becomes more explicit in What The Spine Kept. Two luminous, lung-like forms open on either side of a central vertical structure, which can be read as a spine, stem, root or exposed nervous system. Flowering and anatomical forms become almost impossible to disentangle. The work recalls the Danish expression på rygraden, used to describe something so deeply internalised that it becomes instinctive, like muscle memory—a form of knowing that no longer needs to pass through conscious thought. Here, the spine becomes a site of embodied memory, a structure through which experience and instinct might be retained. Small bursts of colour puncture the forms like blooms, wounds or points of illumination, suggesting something at once vulnerable and generative. Across these works, Touborg’s image-world begins to resemble what he describes as a “nervous garden,” an environment in which bodies, plants and other living structures seem to borrow from one another without settling into a single form. Roses acquire bones; stems resemble vertebrae; water appears to retain a kind of sensory life. These transformations are inseparable from the physical construction of the paintings themselves. Pigment, dye, canvas, textiles, reflective material, botanical matter, dirt and sand are layered, absorbed, rubbed and disturbed until the image seems to emerge through the behaviour of the materials rather than simply being placed upon them. At moments, the surfaces feel scorched or saturated with light; elsewhere they remain quiet, fragile and almost recessive. The result is a world that feels wounded and generative at once, as though unfamiliar forms of life are taking shape through something strangely familiar. In Mine Levende Råd, painting becomes less a means of arriving at an answer than a way of staying with the moment in which an answer is unavailable. The title carries within it the possibility of its own negation: the point at which one no longer knows what to do. Touborg does not attempt to resolve that condition. Instead, he follows the image beyond the point where certainty gives way, remaining attentive to what can still be sensed, held or recognised there.

- Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present Vitello Kunatho, Friedrich Kunath’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery since joining the gallery in 2016, and his first in our Roman space. For this occasion, Kunath unveils a new body of paintings that continues his quiet excavation of emotional ambiguity, cultural hybridity, and the subtle absurdities that shape contemporary life. Working across painting, sculpture, installation, and text, Kunath has long described himself as a “composer of images.” His works unfold like songs - layered, associative, and drifting between registers, where the Romanticism of Germany meets with American pop culture and British subculture, while fragments of music and memory emerge and dissolve. With Vitello Kunatho, this approach translates into landscapes that are both intimate and dissonant, spaces in which estrangement and familiarity coexist. Here, irony and authenticity maintain a fragile balance, while humor softly emerges through a vein of melancholy. In paintings like And The Sad Truth is That I’m Happy and It’s Just A Silly Phase I’m Going Through, language lingers as an echo, similar to a late thought. Words do not explain; they resonate. They remain suspended as an emotional residue — simultaneously confessional and elusive, familiar yet difficult to grasp. In You Won’t Know if you don’t go (Romantic Times), a quiet restlessness emerges, tracing the fragile space between desire and hesitation. Even the exhibition title, Vitello Kunatho, suggests a shift: an expression that seems at once remembered and invented, reflecting Kunath’s persistent interest in slippage, translation, humor, and transformation. Works like Love is Free – Give It Away propose sincerity laid bare without reserve, soon slightly cracked, allowing authenticity and cliché to emerge as close kin. Kunath’s process unfolds through layering, both materially and psychologically. He begins with dense, impasto-rich surfaces that retain a tactile memory. On these, he traces fleeting signs — drawings, notes, Italian words, song fragments, lists, numbers — thoughts caught just before they dissipate. These intimate, unfiltered traces form an underwater language beneath the visible image. Once sealed, an image drawn from our shared repertoire is painted over them, partially concealing what lies beneath. The viewer, lingering, may perceive these hidden strata, like echoes under a surface, inviting a more introspective, reflective mode of looking. Compositions build on quiet dissonance: idyllic horizons interrupted by text, cartoon-like figures adrift in emotionally charged terrains, motifs that seem to migrate from one work to another as if guided by their own logic. These juxtaposition do not resolve; they resonate, mirroring a world in which meaning is never fixed but constantly assembled and undone. Kunath’s works become visual poems: melancholic, softly ironic, and slightly dissonant — where contradiction is not a knot to untie, but a condition to inhabit.

- Tim Van Laere Gallery presents Crowded Valley, the fourth solo exhibition by Bram Demunter at the gallery. For this exhibition, Demunter unveils a new series of paintings and watercolor drawings, while introducing bronze sculpture into his practice for the first time. These new works mark a distinct shift within the artist’s oeuvre. Where earlier paintings unfolded as expansive narrative landscapes populated by countless simultaneous scenes, a more concentrated and self-contained visual world now emerges. Central figures - floating heads, hybrid bodies, or solitary travelers moving between islands and mountains - serve as anchor points around which smaller scenes, animals, spirits, and fragments orbit. The compositions adopt a pronounced circular structure, evoking cosmograms, mandalas, or mythological maps. What gives these works their particular force is their resistance to any singular interpretation. Rather than functioning as linear narratives, they unfold as networks of associations. Fragments appear without fixed hierarchy, references accumulate without explicit explanation. The viewer is invited to forge connections and construct meaning within images that resist definitive reading. In this sense, the paintings operate according to the logic of dreams or myths: coherent yet irrational, structured yet non-linear.

- For Antwerp Art Weekend 2026, DEUSS Gallery ELSEWHERE presents a focused exhibition that approaches photography as a space of attention, where image, light and material presence converge. Photography is not reduced to a picture, but considered as a physical and spatial encounter. Each work emerges from a deliberate process in which capture, scale, surface and presentation collectively determine the intensity of the image. What is offered is not instant consumption, but a sustained experience. The exhibition brings together works by Thibeau Scarceriaux, Karel Fonteyne, Wing Shya and Anouk Van de Wal, artists who each, through distinct visual languages, explore the tension between proximity and distance, clarity and ambiguity, surface and depth. What connects them is a strong sense of image autonomy and a commitment to concentration and precision. Conceived specifically for Antwerp Art Weekend, the exhibition unfolds in a raw New York–style garage space in central Antwerp. The restrained industrial setting remains deliberately secondary to the artworks, creating a quiet contrast that allows the works to fully unfold.
