  • Celebrating Leeds 400 through the places that make Leeds, Leeds. Through our Cultural Collections, we are exploring how the University of Leeds has contributed to the wider city. Artists – both residents and visitors to Leeds – have found inspiration in this city’s spaces, both grand and humble. From imposing civic architecture to spare industrial scenes, as well as its many outdoor green spaces. Depictions of Leeds highlight the city’s significant heritage, across culture, sport, industry, education and innovation. Several artworks capture the development of the University of Leeds itself, as well as the experiences of those studying or working here. This display of artworks from the University Art Collection features paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints, sketches and photographs of Leeds places. They illustrate how the city has changed over time. As we consider the past, Leeds 400 is also an opportunity to consider the city’s future. What will the city look like in another 400 years? What can we do now to ensure that our city continues to innovate and inspire, in a sustainable and inclusive way? How do you think Leeds will – or should – develop in the future?

  • Celebrate ten years of the Treasures of the Brotherton with a bold reimagining of our collection of portrait busts. Since opening in 2016, Treasures of the Brotherton has introduced over 100,000 visitors to the extraordinary Cultural Collections cared for by the University of Leeds. It is a place to share our curiosity about the world. We've sought to invite conversation, spark inspiration, and explored some of the most important questions of our time. Now in 2026 we ask: Who am I to you? Who am I to you? encourages you to see familiar faces in a new light. Explore identity, representation and public memory through sculpture, rare books and 3D technologies. Encounter life casts, coins and medals that challenge traditional ideas of portraiture. Discover how art and science shape our understanding of people, power and cultural heritage. The exhibition invites reflection on what these objects can tell us about our shared past and present. It also explores the silences and absences that shape who is remembered, and who is forgotten.

  • UNEARTHING(S) is Hannah Catherine Jones’ largest solo exhibition to date, and the first in her home county. The site-specific installation responds to Leeds Art Gallery’s distinctive Central Court. Artist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Jones is known for her use of performance, layered soundscapes and spatial interventions to conjure other-worldly installations. Jones’ work focuses on questions of decolonisation, seeking to disrupt the status quo, (re)centre marginalised voices and create space for collective healing. UNEARTHING(S) explores individual and collective themes of grief and regeneration. Considering the personal and cultural loss we experience across space and time, the exhibition draws upon the artist’s own history and experience growing up as part of the region’s Caribbean diaspora. Riffing off the Central Court’s chapel-like architecture, Jones proposes to create space for contemplation by using combinations of sculpture, light and sound. UNEARTHING(S) references and samples Yorkshire and Bajan culture, filtered through Jones’ unique artistic style, infused with subtle mixtures of poignancy and subversion.
