DAS WEISSE HAUS
On now
- Solo Exhibition by Ana de Almeida Opening: Tuesday, September, 15, 2026, 6 pm Duration: 16.09. – 17.10.2026 Location: DAS WEISSE HAUS, souterrain Address: Hegelgasse 14, 1010 Vienna, Austria Welcoming Words by: BLOCKFREI Collective (Leadership of DAS WEISSE HAUS) together with guests from the Erste Bank Sponsoring Programme and the Austrian Cultural Forum Budapest About the exhibition Ana de Almeida’s Someone Will Water Them traces carnations and roses as political statements within the archive of Cold War revolutionary discourse. The exhibition approaches the Portuguese Carnation Revolution (April 25, 1974) and the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution (November 17, 1989) from a perspective of entangled history, examining the symbolic shifts from socialist floristry to the contemporary deployment of floral symbolism as non-violent counter-statement to authoritarian regimes. A modular aluminium structure conceived for the souterrain of DAS WEISSE HAUS simultaneously functions as greenhouse architecture, display infrastructure, and sculptural object. Etched metal drawings, small-scale archival photographs and living carnations and roses grown in a garden in Upper Austria coexist in a single spatial field, forming a constellation rather than a linear argument. The greenhouse structure references both the state greenhouses of socialist Czechoslovakia and the contemporary export greenhouses of Kenya, Colombia, and the Netherlands, positioning IN(TER)DEPENDENCE as the exhibition’s operative condition: flowers that once signified collective sovereignty were always already embedded in the transnational dependencies of industrial floriculture. Revolutionary flowers, it turns out, have never been free. Erste Bank Art Award Now in its eleventh year, the Erste Bank Art Award—developed as a collaboration of DAS WEISSE HAUS and the Erste Bank Sponsoring Programme—celebrates artists who redefine and expand contemporary discourse. This edition is presented in partnership with the Austrian Cultural Forum Budapest. Apart from the solo exhibition in Vienna, at DAS WEISSE HAUS, the award entails a one-month residency in Budapest and another solo exhibition there, set to open in early 2027. Our special thanks go to the team of Erste Bank Sponsoring Programme and to the jury of Erste Bank Art Award 2026 for the cooperation and support! - Krastiņa has been granted this year’s SPOT Exchange Award. The award includes a six-month residency in Vienna with a working space at STUDIO DAS WEISSE HAUS, offering the selected artist/curator dedicated resources, a vibrant and supportive creative environment, and meaningful engagement with a wide artistic network. The residency concludes with a final curated duo-exhibition on the upper floor of DAS WEISSE HAUS, planned to be realized in collaboration with QMA Artist Collective 2026. SPOT Exchange is a collaborative initiative by Art Academy of Latvia and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, together with Zuzeum Art Centre and DAS WEISSE HAUS. The program supports the professional development of emerging artists and curators through international exchange, mentorship, and connections between academic and professional artistic contexts. Following an artistic fellowship within the same program in 2025 — when DAS WEISSE HAUS welcomed Latvian artist Krišjānis Beļavskis as Artist-in-Residency at STUDIO DAS WEISSE HAUS from July to December — this exchange now continues with a six-month curatorial fellowship in Vienna. About the curator: Avelīna Armanda Krastiņa is an emerging curator from Latvia whose practice explores the intersections of contemporary art, activism, and the representation of nonhuman animals. Her curatorial work focuses on how exhibitions can function as critical and socially engaged platforms that address ethical questions around human–animal relationships. During her residency, Krastiņa will develop an exhibition exploring how contemporary art can challenge anthropocentric perspectives and create new ways of thinking about interspecies relationships, ecological responsibility, and sustainable futures. Her curatorial approach is informed by her MA studies in Curatorial Studies at the Art Academy of Latvia and her previous experience as a veterinary assistant, which shaped her understanding of the ethical complexities of human–animal relations.Description

- In addition to the interior, the exterior space was also used for an Extra – Gerhard Himmer’s serial wall piece “Trust”, which makes use of advertising vocabulary, received a whole new twist in the environment of social institutions. The third exhibition accomodation we captured the space of the former social ministry in the fifth district of Vienna – indeed a little more outlying however it was a speciality to realize many projects even in this culturally more calm area. In the loft similar, friendly and cream-coloured building with big windows some well-known optical details were present: orange coloured power sockets, much linoleum and solid guide rails. The long hallway as well as the nearly cellular floor plan will stay in good memory. In addition to us, the property continued to be used by several social institutions. Starting in Fall 2010, this became my usual start into a day almost for a year, since das weisse haus had occupied Geigergasse 5–9. My first working day started at the moving truck on Wollzeile, waiting to depart to the fifth district. Right there I already experienced, live and in technicolor, the full team in action, carrying boxes and furniture and got the instant feeling of great times ahead at das weisse haus. I particularly remember the time and exchange with the wonderful colleagues in this year – be it drinking instant coffee at team meetings every Tuesday, behind the bar at the openings, during installation of the exhibitions or filling the walls while disassembling them afterwards. Coming fresh from university, there was no better place for me to watch and learn from scratch, how an exhibition with young artists would grow and how artists appropriated the rooms of this old official building each time differently using it as an artistic medium. I have taken my love for the spaces behind art works with me from the time in das weisse haus. Nomadically inclined as well, I was fascinated by the moving-around, the occupation and appropriation of old buildings and their structures.Description

- We warmly invite you to join the Artist Talk with Carlos Monleón in conversation with Anne Faucheret and experience the Solo Exhibition Parliament of Streams on site. The installation immerses the audience in an audio(visual) dispositif that shifts terrestrial positionality and rearranges the sensible. Taking visitors below the water’s surface, the work engages with what usually remains beyond attention. Following a team of scientists researching the underwater ecosystems of the Danube River and several of its tributaries, the artist developed specific sound recording devices to gather materials, later translating and transforming them into multilayered, spatialized sonic and material compositions.Description

- Carlos Monleón 's Parliament of Streams immerses the audience's bodies in an audio(visual) dispositif that alters terrestrial positionality and rearranges the sensible. It plunges visitors below the surface of waters, allowing them to engage with what usually remains below their attention. Following a team of scientists researching the underwater ecosystems of the Danube River and some of its tributaries, the artist developed specific sound recording devices to gather materials, which he then translated, transformed, and transmuted into multilayered and spatialized sonic and material compositions. The installation interlaces different scales and rhythms; superimposing different textures, sculpted materials, and frequencies in a 'poetics of interscalarity' that dwells on the interdependence of mental, social, and environmental ecologies. Parliament of Streams – title inspired from Bruno Latour’s ' Parliament of Things' – is an artistic socio-technical dispositif. It operates as an arrangement of heterogeneous elements – technologies, discourses, materials– that organizes affects and knowledge and points to the silenced more-than-human voices in the governance of water bodies. The work aims at reactivating humans’ sensitivity for bodies of water and the expressions of the species composing and inhabiting them, evoking a sense of strange conviviality, wonder, and kinship.Description

- Welcome, Anita Karabašić at STUDIO DAS WEISSE HAUS! We are pleased to welcome Anita Karabašić as the incoming Artist-in-Residency at STUDIO DAS WEISSE HAUS! She was selected through an international open call dedicated to artists based outside Austria whose practices engage with public space and community-based methodologies. The residency is realized within the framework of the project Responding to Trauma and Cultural Heritage Destruction, implemented by BLOCKFREI and hosted by STUDIO DAS WEISSE HAUS, and co-funded by the European Commission through the Creative Europe programme. The project is led by Documenta – Center for Dealing with the Past and implemented in partnership with Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Apoteka – Space for Contemporary Art, and STAN. The project examines the political, social, and cultural dimensions of trauma resulting from the destruction of cultural heritage in war-affected societies, positioning artistic practice as a catalyst for reflection, dialogue, and collective healing. Through research, artistic production, and public engagement, it explores how artistic processes can transform experiences of loss into shared understanding.Description

- A film by Lena Kalleitner Code of Conflict 2:57, looped, 2024 curated by Pia Wamsler Code of Conflict is a video animation by Lena Kalleitner that explores the complex relationship between power, technology, and warfare. Set within a sterile, cold, chrome-like environment with a dystopian undertone, the work juxtaposes abstract digital code with the exposed human body as a site of vulnerability. The naked figure underscores how human lives are deeply entangled with technological systems that shape contemporary conflict. The work reflects on how technological warfare unfolds through layered political, economic, and computational structures, revealing that systems often perceived as autonomous are sustained by human decisions and material infrastructures. It critiques the concentration of interpretative and decision-making power in the hands of a small group of influential figures—tech moguls, financiers, and political elites—whose actions reverberate across social and geopolitical landscapes. By foregrounding bodily exposure within a technological environment, the animation challenges narratives of control and self-sufficiency, emphasizing how vulnerability, agency, and responsibility emerge through deeply connected systems of violence. Lena Kalleitner is a media artist based in Vienna. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Media Technology from the University of Applied Sciences Sankt Pölten and is currently studying Digital Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Originally from the field of 3D Design and Animation, her practice focuses on creating multidimensional artworks, such as media installations and mixed-media experiences. While her artistic work is still strongly influenced by her experience in 3D, she also incorporates methods such as coding/web scraping/OSINT in her works, constantly driven by a focus on political and socio-economic issues. - Carlos Monleón explores digestion, metabolism, and evolution as processes of exchange, circulation, and assimilation. Through sculptural, sonic, and participatory works, such as the ‘edible opera’ Harmony (2012) and the public platform Sauna (2017), he stages settings where taste, scent, and sound become tools for collective sensing. His recent project River Breathing voices the Ebro River’s fragility through data, sound, and the figure of the naiad. Monleón’s work is grounded in a collaborative, research-based, and multidisciplinary practice.Description
