  • The exhibition is accompanied by a statement written by the artist: primordial (rainbow) Fish are among the oldest living forms on Earth. They emerged long before birds, mammals, or human beings, inhabiting an ancient ocean from which all complex life eventually evolved. In 2016, I modeled forty-seven fish in clay and cast them in raw bronze. Each fish was given the name of a natural phenomenon; cloud, rain, lightning, mountain, moon, wind, as though every force in nature emerged from the same primordial source. Together they formed primordial. Ten years later, the fish return to Gladstone Gallery in Brussels, occupying the very same rooms in which they first appeared. Their forms remain unchanged, yet they have undergone a transformation. Cast this time in colored glass, they no longer absorb light but hold it within themselves. The heaviness of bronze gives way to transparency.

  • Gladstone is pleased to announce The Rest, an exhibition of new paintings by Rachel Rose. Presented at our 64th Street gallery, this body of work expands upon the artist’s past investigations into the relationship between storytelling, landscape, and the structuring of our belief systems. Rose here addresses the canon of devotional paintings that depict the biblical allegory of the holy family’s flight to Egypt. Illustrating a pause in the journey of Mary, Joseph, and the newborn Jesus as they escape the threat of King Herod, these images typically conflate the natural world with indications of serenity, danger, or the miraculous, situating the story’s protagonists in a world driven by symbolism. For The Rest, Rose has chosen to address this moment exclusively from the perspective of Mary, depopulating the picture plane and extracting all imagery extraneous to this singular point of view. Through this lens, we see the edge of a forest, the drift of clouds passing through the sky or over a moon, the prismatic refraction of the sun’s light, branches bending towards the earth. The 13 paintings included in the series expand this moment to a full day, charting the shift from dawn to morning, afternoon to dusk, and dusk to night.

  • Gladstone Gallery presents an exhibition of 20 new and historic works by Peter Saul, spanning seven decades of the artist’s narrative practice, with many on view for the first time. Saul’s oeuvre has been distinguished by an unflinching resistance to convention, embracing vivid color and a sharp, often satirical approach to subject matter with formal rigor. The thematic survey, titled Peter Saul’s Art History, marks his first exhibition with the Gallery since joining its program in 2025, and centers on an ongoing exploration of works by renowned 20th-century artists Salvador Dalí, Willem de Kooning, Marcel Duchamp, and Pablo Picasso.
