On now
- Jörg Immendorff, Für alle Lieben in der Welt, 1966 With the first comprehensive retrospective in Immendorff’s adopted hometown of Düsseldorf, where he studied, taught and worked for decades, the Kunstpalast is bringing him back into the spotlight. Around 120 works spanning five decades trace his journey from his early days at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf to the final works he made in his studio here. Arranged chronologically, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings and documentation of Immendorff’s actions. Supplementary archival and photographic material, sketches, writings and press clippings convey a vivid picture of his wide-ranging conception of art and his multifaceted view of the world. Immendorff’s idea of art as a process of “becoming human” – that is, as a means through which people explore their experiences and social roles – runs throughout the entire exhibition. In his works, personal, political and social symbols, texts and themes coalesce into complex visualDescription

- Niki de Saint Phalle, Nana rouge jambes en l’air, c. 1968 "Nana Power!" – seen from today’s vantage point, her singular practice and her determination to upend gender relations place her squarely within the sphere of feminist activism, even if she never claimed the term herself. The exhibition places de Saint Phalle’s work in dialogue with selected pieces by her contemporaries. Encounters with artist friends such as Jean Tinguely, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as Yayoi Kusama and Dorothy Iannone, sharpen the contours of her position and illuminate the enduring impact of her artistic legacy. - The Kunstpalast’s collection is constantly evolving. To mark the GeSoLei’s anniversary, we’re taking that quite literally: with a sports circuit right in the heart of the art! In 1926, the Exhibition for Health Care, Social Welfare and Physical Exercise (GeSo Lei) was held in the Ehrenhof buildings and beyond. The exhibition attracted over 7.5 million visitors. Sport played a central role, with activities ranging from gymnastics and athletics to water sports. Even today, physical exercise plays a major role in many people’s lives. Around 12 million Germans are members of a gym, which equates to approximately 15 per cent of the population. The reasons why we do sport – or at least intend to – are varied: competition or team spirit, exertion or relaxation, self-improvement or simply for fun. GYM invites visitors to discover the current scope and significance of sport on a journey through the collection. Endurance and strength training machines, equipment and exercises can be actively used. At 23 stations, visitors can experience the art on displayDescription
