Copyright Already in the title, "Carrying" refers to how places carry certain stories. The exhibition and event project activates various spaces inside and outside the Museum Brandhorst. International artists such as Hêlîn Alas, Cana Bilir-Meier, Louise Lawler, Kate Newby, Tiffany Sia, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Leyla Yenirce occupy historically charged locations – like Cy Twombly's "Lepanto" room or the so-called "Turkish Gate". Architectural interventions, performances, paintings, sound, and film works engage in dialogue with the museum and question the intertwining of military and cultural power. Exhibition info Duration [PARA_DATE_HINT] 14 May 2026 to 8 November 2026 [/PARA_DATE_HINT] Location Upper floor, basement and outdoor space Curated by Franziska Linhardt Press release [LINK text='Carrying' href='https://www.museum-brandhorst.de/pressemitteilungen/carrying'] About the exhibition Starting point is the site where today the Museum Brandhorst, the Pinakothek der Moderne, and other institutions of the Kunstareal are located. Here once stood the Prince Arnulf Barracks, also known as the "Turkish Barracks". The name of the 1826-built military complex goes back to war prisoners who were brought to Bavaria for forced labor from the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 17th century. These stories have been inscribed in local and street names like that of the "Turkenstraße". Which stories are told, who tells them, and how? This applies especially to places committed to knowledge production and cultural mediation. The invited artists approach this question from different perspectives, exploring how history and memory intertwine with partly invented narratives – and are further carried on through images, media, and monuments. Layers of exchange overlap historical realities of violence, exploitation, and cultural appropriation and continue to be inscribed as patterns – from the so-called "guest worker" era to ongoing debates about territorial borders, migration, and belonging. Especially where a supposed separation of war and culture conceals their actual intertwining, these questions gain new urgency. "Carrying" understands the museum as a resonance space in which the institution questions its own history and identity and connects local approaches with global issues.

Long Story Short.
  • Art stories Beyond formal developments and turning points, the exhibition considers how art responds to historical events, social changes, and technological innovations, and how it reflects them in artistic processes. What impact did the postwar economic boom have on artists’ engagement with materials? What did the politicization of society in the 1960s mean for artistic practice? In what ways has digitalization changed the production of art? Each gallery functions as an exhibition in its own right, narrating a specific art-historical moment in the context of its time or focusing on selected groups of works by individual artists. Beginning with the process-oriented material explorations of Arte Povera and the formal reduction of Minimalism, through the conceptual photography of the late 1970s and the intense engagements with body, gender, and identity in the 1980s, and culminating in the groundbreaking painting discourses of the 1990s, the result is a kaleidoscope of art-historical narratives of the recent past. The engagement with digital media and technologies reflects one aspect of artistic production today and forms an open-ended conclusion to the exhibition.

Jahrhunderts.

  • Encounters Each work unfolds its meaning not only through interaction with the object placed opposite it, but especially through the individual perspectives of the viewers. The perception of art is not static; it responds to contexts and surroundings. In this way, each of the ‘Confrontations’ carries the potential for a new encounter, one that can also allow for contradictions. In this sense, confrontation is understood not only as friction but also as an opportunity for openness and transformation. The exhibition ‘Confrontations’ thus draws on the transformative power of difference—not in the sense of resolving opposites, but as an invitation to productively engage with tensions and to move beyond established habits of seeing and thinking.

  • Perspectives At the heart of the show are the artists’ individual works, each bringing their own history, practice, and conditions of creation. Only in dialogue do new readings emerge, revealing what art knows to tell itself and us beyond art-historical narratives. Which stories come to the fore and which recede? Which perspectives shift? And what do the confrontations reveal about our present—shaped by social tension, political polarization, and cultural upheaval?

  • Exhibition view Roni Horn, You Are the Weather, 1994-96 Copyright "You Are the Weather" by Roni Horn consists of 100 pictures of a young woman—slightly larger-than-life. The photographs were all taken in hot springs in Iceland. Through her eyes, her facial expressions, and the reflections of light on her skin, the unknown bather’s face reflects the weather (and her internal emotions). At the same time, the gaze of the subject portrayed reflects back on the viewer themselves, which might be what the title is alluding to. Exhibition info Period 5 November 2024 until 26 April 2026 Location Upper floor Curated by Dr. Monika Bayer-Wermuth Notice Due to remodeling, the exhibition will be temporarily closed until September 12. About the exhibition The artist said of the sitter that "those changes, that range of emotion—she looks like she’s irritated, like she’s angry—were in fact provoked by the weather. It’s the sun in her eyes, it’s snowing, it’s windy. When you are in the room with her it’s as though you’ve provoked those responses: you become the weather." The work speaks of intimacy, affection, and desire, of the impossibility of ever really capturing a face, and of the power dynamics inherent to a portrait situation. The photo series consists of 36 gelatin silver prints and 64 chromogenic colour prints and is one of the best-known works by Roni Horn (b. 1955 in New York). It was created in July–August 1994 on a joint trip with Margrét H. Blöndal and was published as an artist’s book in 1997. Horn has been visiting the island regularly since 1975—she describes herself as a "chronic tourist." Many of the artist’s works revolve around life there. The topos of water runs through her oeuvre; for example, she has also created a series of works on the Thames.
