Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present Myrstackarnas land / Land of Anthills, the first solo show of new and recent works by the celebrated Swedish artist Jockum Nordström at the gallery. This exhibition brings together a rich constellation of Nordström’s intimate collages, evocative pencil drawings, and delicately balanced mobile sculptures. We have all, at some point, been captivated by an image, moved by its resemblance to something in our memory. Memory is malleable, whimsical and at times tangible. Memory images point to something beyond oblivion. In the case of an artist, this can consist of the inadvertent borrowing of a detail from a certain artwork in the form of a subconscious memory of a composition the artist has once seen. The work then ontstaat er een nieuw werk door de compositie opnieuw toe te passen in het heden. Zo wordt het werk gevalideerd, mogelijk als een teken van bewondering voor de andere kunstenaar. Jockum Nordström doet veel aan validering in zijn werken. Hij is vooral gevoelig voor alles wat te maken heeft met Zweedse tekenkunst door de eeuwen heen, van de Zweedse historische verhalen uit de 18e eeuw tot de humoristen uit de 19e eeuw en de naïviteit en nuchterheid van de 20e eeuw. Nordströms kennis geeft hem een gevoel van nederigheid, zowel ten opzichte van de toegewijde aanpak van zijn voorgangers als hun onvoorwaardelijke verlangen om te creëren. Een verlangen dat Nordström duidelijk deelt. Zijn studio ligt vol met fragmenten van herinneringen die zijn achtergelaten, in een boek, een envelop, een etiket, een albumhoes, een tekening, een delicate collage, een kwetsbaar beeldhouwwerk... alles gehuld in herinneringen, alsof het de herinneringen zelf zijn die zijn achtergelaten. Gewist. De fragmenten worden vervolgens samengevoegd tot nieuwe beelden, nieuwe herinneringen, waarin alles opnieuw kan plaatsvinden. Tot nieuwe gebeurtenissen als aandenken aan iets dat Nordström toevallig passeert: een gevel, een persoon, een gesprek, een tentoonstelling. Nordströms wereld en dagelijks leven zijn analoog, sociale media interesseren hem totaal niet. In plaats van zijn woede te richten op de verhelderende enen en nullen, beeldt Nordström diepgaande menselijke avonturen uit waarmee we ons kunnen identificeren in tijd en ruimte. Een trap die nergens naartoe leidt. Een onderbroken gesprek. Als de figuren in de tekeningen hun gesprek hebben beëindigd, is dat ongetwijfeld omdat ze elkaars blik niet meer ontmoeten. Alles is gezegd, alles is een herinnering, alles is de toekomst.

Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to announce Oi on Canvas, the new solo show of Belgian artist Dennis Tyfus. This is the third solo show of Tyfus since joining Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2021 and his first show in our Roman space. In this exhibition he will present his paintings for the first time to the public. Born in Antwerp in 1979, Dennis Tyfus is a shape-shifter of contemporary art—an artist, musician, publisher, and performer whose work resists categorization. With a practice that flows freely between drawing, sculpture, installation, music, tattooing, video, publishing, and live performance, Tyfus creates an ever-expanding, self-sustaining universe where each medium cross-pollinates the other. At the heart of Tyfus’s work is a spirit of improvisation, irreverence, and play. Rooted in the ethos of DIY and underground culture, he transforms constraints into opportunities and the unexpected into a driving force. His imagery often emerges from hypnagogic states—those moments between wakefulness and sleep—resulting in surreal and dreamlike compositions. Rather than treating painting as a fixed or sacred form, Tyfus uses it as another stage for his improvisational sensibility, allowing figures, landscapes, and symbols to emerge organically. The result is a body of work where the absurd rubs shoulders with the poetic, and the confrontational hides inside moments of tenderness.
